Bower T-Mount 500mm f/8.0 Preset Telephoto Lens, Requires T-Mount. Overview

The Bower 500mm f/8 Manual Focus Lens is a classic refractor-style T-mount lens, with an aperture diaphragm in the middle of the lens body to stop down the aperture when necessary. However, it is assumed that much of the shooting with such a lens will be at its maximum f/8.0 aperture, with a tripod, monopod, or other such support. When combined with the T-mount to fit your camera system, this super telephoto works on both "full frame" cameras as well as the "APS-C" style digital SLR cameras. T-Mounts are available for all the digital SLR systems and even for C-mount systems. However, in every case the aperture is not communicated to the camera body. As such, you can use the lens in "M" manual exposure mode or "A" aperture-priority mode only. This lens' sophisticated achromatic refractor design yields images with pleasing peak contrast and well controlled flare. It can be used at maximum aperture on a very bright day for some images of moving subjects. This lens can also be used as a handheld telescope by adding Lumicon's LA1070 adapter along with a 1.25" 45°/60°/90° diagonal and any 1.25" eyepiece, or for astrophotography by using on an SLR mounted to a Vixen GP2 Photo Guider or other motorized equatorial telescope mount.

Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4 DC Macro OS (Optical Stabilizer) HSM AF Lens Kit, for Canon EOS Cameras with Tiffen 72mm UV Wide Angle Filter, Professional Lens Cleaning Kit, Lens Cap for Wide Angle Filters Review

Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4 DC Macro OS (Optical Stabilizer) HSM AF Lens Kit, for Canon EOS Cameras with Tiffen 72mm UV Wide Angle Filter, Professional Lens Cleaning Kit, Lens Cap for Wide Angle Filters Overview

Sigma Corporation adds unique, anti-shake technology to award-winning 17-70mm lens Sigma announced the new Sigma 17-70mm F2.8-4 DC MACRO OS HSM. This large aperture standard zoom lens offers an aperture of F2.8 at the 17mm focal length and is ideal for many situations such as portraits, sports, macro and general photography The OS (Optical Stabilizer) function offers the use of shutter speeds approximately 4 stops slower than would otherwise be possible. The maximum aperture of F2.8 makes this lens ideal for hand held photography as well as producing an attractive background blur and high speed auto focus. This lens has a minimum focusing distance of 22cm (8.7..) throughout the entire zoom range and maximum magnification ratio of 1:2.7, making it ideal for close-up photography. It is possible to focus as close as approximately 4.7cm from the tip of the lens to the subject making this lens particularly useful for close-up photography. Three aspherical lenses and one ELD (Extraordinary Low Dispersion) glass element provide excellent correction for all types of aberrations. High image quality is assured throughout the entire zoom range. The Super Multi-Layer Coating reduces flare and ghosting and provides high contrast images. The incorporation of HSM (Hyper Sonic Motor) ensures a quiet and high speed AF. This lens has a rounded 7 blade diaphragm which creates an attractive blur to the out of focus areas of the image

Canon EF 35mm f/2 Wide Angle Lens for Canon SLR Cameras

Canon EF 35mm f/2 Wide Angle Lens for Canon SLR Cameras Review

I bought this lens because I wanted a good, fast prime lens for indoor use on my 50D. I also own the EF 50mm f/1.4 which I love, but indoors I find it less useful due to the crop frame sensor of the 50D.

I knew I wanted something in the wide angle range (due to the 1.6x crop frame of the camera) so I looked at the EF 28mm f/1.8 USM and the EF 35mm f/2.0. Based on reviews here at Amazon as well as outside websites I decided to go with the 35mm f/2.0 because the 28mm seems to have consistently negative reviews. I was also able to pick up this 35mm for about 0 less than the 28mm so it seemed to be a better investment.

I have now had the 35mm for about 1 month and taken over 300 photos with it on my camera. All in all I am happy with the lens and it has been on my camera nearly the whole time I have owned it. The images are sharp and the color is good. This is a fast lens and you can get some great bokeh when you open it up wide which is nice when you want to get creative with your photos.

However, I am more than frustrated with the auto focusing with this lens. It does not seem to want to focus on the subject of the frame, many images end up out of focus if I let the camera do all of the work. When left to its own devices, many times this lens will not produce images that are in focus, or at east not what you wanted in focus.

The only way I can get the great photos that this lens is capable of is when I take control of the focusing points and select exactly what I want in focus for each shot. This is not overly difficult and I am used to it because I am generally selecting the desired auto focus point for each shot, but this lens seems to be abnormally challenged at focusing on the desired subject on its own.

This has been a major disappointment because unfortunately I know that when someone else (who is not familiar with how to use the camera) picks it up it is 50/50 whether the photo turns out, especially in low light situations.

I feel that this is a problem if you are looking at this lens to be a good all around indoor prime for candids and family shots and especially if you want to be in some of the photos.

This is a good lens if you are familiar with how to use the auto focus selectivity features of your camera. The image quality is good, similar to the 50mm f/1.4, and definately better than any kit lens you may have, but don't expect to put this lens on your camera and never have to learn how to really use it on your camera.

Nikon 35mm f/1.8G AF-S DX Lens for Nikon Digital SLR Cameras

Nikon 35mm f/1.8G AF-S DX Lens for Nikon Digital SLR Cameras Review

I purchased the Nikon 35mm f/1.8 lens as the primary lens for use on my new D5000 camera. The lens is amazing (and so is the D5000). The sharpness, contrast, and color fidelity for this lens makes it seem like a much more expensive lens. The lens is very bright and focuses quickly. There is very little to dislike about this lens. But there are a few minor things that need to be mentioned. The lens has a bit of barrel distortion, which is somewhat surprising for a standard focal length prime lens. I included two photos of Montreal's Notre Dame Basillica that shows the effect in the user photo section of this Amazon page. It is simple barrel distortion, and Capture NX2 will automatically correct for it (or for any other Nikon lens distortion or vignetting). Supposedly, there is some minor vignetting with this lens, but I have never been able to see it. In truth, the barrel distortion is usually not visible to me. BTW, Capture NX2 is a wonderful piece of software for working with Nikon NEF files. Between correcting for aberrations of all Nikon lenses automatically, providing easy tools for working with Nikon controls like Auto D-lighting in software, and providing a pleasing assortment of very user-friendly pixel-tweaking tools, this software is the perfect accompaniment to Nikon hardware.

The second limitation with this lens is its inability to shoot macro photographs. The maximum magnification is 1:6.3. I'm not really into macro photography, so this was not particularly important to me. If you are more devoted to macrophotography, though, you should be aware of this limitation. If you like to shoot macro without a tripod, you will also miss the lack of VR on this lens. I can't imagine it would be of any value in any other context with a lens this short, though. So I don't consider the lack of VR to be a flaw in this lens design -- it is an appropriate cost-savings of an unnecessary feature. I would much rather have this lens at 0 than a VR version of it at 0.

The third limitation is that there is no distance scale for the lens' focus. This makes it almost impossible to get an accurate sense of where the hyperfocal point should be using this lens. You just need to "eyeball it" and hope for the best.

Finally, the lens is a "G" type lens, so it does not have any way to set the aperture manually -- you need to use the camera's aperture controls. Personally, I am fine with that approach. But it may be an irritation to some people.

When I bought the D5000, I bought it without the kit lens because I wanted to use this as my main "walking around" lens. I am very happy with that decision. I have acquired the 55-200mm VR kit lens for telephoto, and am about to buy the Tokina 12-24mm f/4.0 DX II for wide angle. But this 35mm is my main squeeze with this camera, and I am delighted with it. If you looked at the Notre Dame pics, you have some idea of how good this lens is in very dark circumstances. Between the low-light performance of the D5000 and this lens, I really feel that there aren't any conditions under which I would want to take a picture but would be limited by my equipment. There are still shots that exceed my skill, but not my equipment.
